Weddings at the Old Pavilion

The weddings that take place here at the Old Pavilion are truly something special. The site is a little gem situated in the grounds of Cuckoo Down House, an American-style clapperboard residence with stunning views all the way to Dartmoor, set in 15 acres of beautiful land above Honiton in East Devon with ample space for you to envisage everything you want for your perfect event.

At the Old Pavilion we run an echo friendly, sustainable site on organic principles. Our energy comes from 50kws of solar panels, our heating comes from biomass willow and hedge row laying in rotation. We harvest rain water and store 10,000 litres for watering our extensive veg plot and flower garden. The manure comes from the stables next door – all of 100 meters away. We recycle our shower water from the Old Pavilion to our orchard. At the end of the wedding season we take a hay crop from the wild flower meadow and then graze it with local sheep. This creates a very beautiful environment for you to weave into your special celebration.

What we offer in our package has been tailored by our experience over the years to deliver what we think is the perfect wedding experience, supported by three dedicated staff who know how to remove all the stress, leaving you to create your own wonderful three-day event in any way you choose. We honour the ‘do it yourself’ ethos, allowing you to use outside professionals of your choice.

The 2018 package includes:

Exclusive use of our 15-acre site for three days from 11am on Friday until 7pm on Sunday; The Old Pavilion; a marquee; a silent disco with 100 headsets; a yurt; five fabulous B&B accommodation sites for two nights; a mobile rustic wooden bar; a large refrigerated trailer; secret garden with bandstand; full-sized cricket pitch/games field; a designated car park for 60 cars; and finally three helpful staff. Nothing beats a site visit to see for yourself, but here is our attempt to give a bit more detail.

The Site:

15 acres of stunning grounds, including a 5-acre flower meadow; full-sized cricket pitch/games field; secret garden with bandstand – for that garden party feel; beech walk; large fire pit with masses of logs; two ‘half oil drum’ BBQs with charcoal; 40 straw bales; all electricity and water; extensive festoon lighting around the ‘square’ + fairy lights and a hidden hardstanding car park for 60 cars.  (map on 'contact us' page.)

The Old Pavilion:

This wonderfully versatile building, which is decorated in vintage arts and crafts paraphernalia with more baskets than you can count, consists of a large, long room with kitchen, aga, electric cooker, standard fridge/freezer, dishwasher and village hall-type china, cutlery and lots of kitchen pans and utensils. There are four loos (two disabled) and six showers, for girls and boys separately, which guests who are sleeping in the Shepherd's Hut and Summer House can use. Disco lighting is provided to change the atmosphere in the evening.

The Marquee:

Adjoining the pavilion on a raised deck is an old-fashioned-looking marquee, 20ft wide by 40ft long, with matting, and detachable sides if weather permits. There are 14 trestle tables (and some spares) and over a hundred chairs with gingham cushions, as well as plenty of festoon lighting.

Silent Disco:

If you have not experienced a silent disco, be prepared for a complete fun fest. We provide 100 headsets that tune into one or two channels of music downloaded from an iPod, iPhone or similar device with music chosen by you, your DJ or music maestro!

The Yurt:

This lovely canvas 20ft-diameter handmade yurt can and has been used for many different themes – a chill-out area, kids’ zone, photo booth, film or slide shows or whatever you want. It is decorated with fairy lights, coir matting and hanging lanterns.

The B&B Accommodation Options:

We have four fabulous sites to accommodate your more ‘important’ guests for Friday and Saturday nights (extra nights can be arranged).

1/. The Chattel House

Tucked away in the secret garden is our beautiful wooden ‘Caribbean House’; these were originally used by workers with families as they travelled from one plantation to the next, moving all their goods and chattels – hence the name. This one featured at Chelsea Flower Show in 2003. It has a double bed, hot and cold running water and compost loo. Included is a delicious breakfast in a box, left outside your door to enjoy on the veranda.

2/. The Wedding Suite

Situated in the main house with its own separate entrance, this is the perfect place for either the bride and her bridesmaids to stay – as there is a large bedroom, bathroom with bath and a huge sitting room for changing, make-up and hair styling etc. – or a set of parents who can still offer the suite for getting ready for the main event. We supply hairdriers, a hanging rail, iron and ironing board. Breakfast is served downstairs in the main house.

3/. Double En Suite

Also in the main house, this is a lovely double-bedded room with a large shower in the bathroom – very useful for the ‘other’ set of parents. As with the wedding suite, breakfast is served downstairs in the main house.

4/. The Shepherd’s Hut

Set in a small orchard, this original shepherd’s hut nestles a short distance from the pavilion. Beautifully decorated with a small wood-burning stove and double bed, the hut is not for anyone over 6ft tall! This is luxury ‘glamping’, so the pavilion facilities will need to be used.

5/. The Summer House

This attractive wooden building, which is sited near the Pavilion is a twin bedded room. This is luxury ‘glamping’, so again the pavilion facilities will need to be used.

Mobile Rustic Wooden Bar:

This is a great addition to our wooden building collection and has lots of shelves inside where you can stack your drinks. We don’t charge corkage.

Large Refrigerated Trailer:

Usually sited near the bar, this is a discreet walk-in cool storage room that will house all of your catering needs, ice and drink to keep everything really cold.

Secret Garden and Bandstand:

This lies in a secluded part of the garden near the house and has become one of the favourite sites to hold the ceremony. You walk through double gates into the secret garden where we have a bandstand – ideal for a string quartet to serenade guests or some speeches to be heard over afternoon tea.

The Cricket Pitch/Games Field:

We ran a prep school on the site for 12 years and the pavilion was at that time the school’s cricket pavilion. We have everything you need to host a match on Sunday if this is your passion, even down to the umpires’ coats. If not, a sports day may take your fancy and we have sacks for a sack race, rounders and croquet equipment, football goals and Kwik Cricket for you to set up where you like. We also have a bouncy castle to hire.

Car Park:

This is sited on the other side of the games field with its own entrance and lit path to the pavilion. It has a hardstanding surface that will take up to 60 cars.

And finally:

Dedicated staff:

Our site manager (Bee), my husband (Geoffrey) and I (Mary Ann) are here from start to finish. We do all we can to support, advise when asked and go the extra mile to help make this, quite simply, the best day of your lives.

Photos from last year's weddings can be found

on the 'Gallery' link on the tool bar above.

With respect;

There are 4 things we would ask you to respect in regards to the ethos of the site;

No glasses, we insist on all glasses and beer 'mugs' being plastic or waxed paper. (wine bottles excluded, we would appreciate beer cans rather than beer bottles).

No dogs (we have free range animals).

Electronic music of any kind can only beplayed inside the Pavilion and stops at 11.00 pm, only ‘silent discos’ are exempt.

No Fireworks, sparklers, smoke machines or flying paper lanterns of any kind.

Outside contractors.

If you are hiring outside caterers with waiting staff, they can use their own cutlery, china and acrylic glasses, we have a 'no glass on the grass' policy. There is plenty of room for a large marquee and / or catering tent for a wedding of over 100 people. Any outside contractors must contact us well in advance to discuss your requirements. For more than 100 guests, portable loos will need to be hired.

* We have a fee of £250 for yurts, tipis and marquees used as an extra 'function space'. Catering tents are free but caterers must remove all oil and fat from the site.

Early deliveries and late collections by prior arrangement.

Extras you might like to hire:

  • Girl/Boy Friday can be hired at £10 per hour.
  • Taupe linen tablecloths (to fit 14 trestle tables) - £70
  • 60 Vintage tea cups, saucersand plates. £50 (we washup.)
  • Extra Straw bales (you get 40 free); You can hire at £1 per bale.
  • Bouncy castle – £50 per 2 hour session, needing supervision by a responsible adult at all times.
